Isekai Office Worker: The Other World's Books Depend on the Bean Counter OVA

Genres: isekai, romance

I'm so glad we got an extra episode for this series! It's anime original and super cute! It also sets up the story line for the 3rd book, so I'm really hoping a 2nd season is in the works.

Kujima: Why Sing, When You Can Warble?

Genres: comedy, slice of life

I honestly thought Kujima was going to be an unbearably annoying character (he is don't worry) but this show is still quite wholesome. Kujima is a strange creature from Russia that migrated to Japan (as birds, or bird-creatures in this case do), and Arata finds him and invites him to live with his family. What follows is how a stranger can end up bringing a whole family together, and becoming an important part of their lives. It's touching and heartwarming, and Kujima's antics, while grating aurally, end up being genuinely funny at moments. The voice-actress for Kujima seriously does a great job of emulating his Russian-accented Japanese. Recommended if you can stand it lol.

Kusunoki's Garden of Gods

Genres: slice of life, iyashikei

The series is about a man who moves to a new (rural) town to take care of a house that is unable to be sold by some relatives. It's a nice place, and his job is to act as it's caretaker. He encounters the local kami/gods in the area who are drawn to his purification abilities, and decide to stick around.

It's hard to say that this show did anything particularly wrong, but I wouldn't say it was amazing either. The animation was okay, and the plot was generally fun to keep up with every week.

It's not a show that requires deep investment, so the viewer can simply enjoy how cute the antics are of the kami that visit the Kusunoki household. They're not his pets, but Minato takes care of the kami that visit his place and shows due respect to them as if they were his own. That kindness is returned to him by favors or powers that the kami bestow on him, and he gradually learns to use his abilities over time to help solve incidents that occur in town.

It's kind of crazy that he's such catnip for all the gods, but he's a nice, pleasant, respectful young man who gives you good food. What more could a kami want? This show was fun to watch weekly.

Lord of Mysteries Specials: City of Silver, The Marked Hunt

Genres: fantasy, isekai, drama

I really liked Lord of Mysteries when it aired last year, and it got me interested in Chinese anime (a.k.a donghua) as a whole. I also got into the novels for this series as well. These three episodes adapt some storylines that were skipped in the first season, and fit between episodes 10 and 11 of the first season.

I had a good time! The animation is as beautiful as always, and it filled in the gaps of the story, particularly with the Tarot Club members. It also added information that I wasn't sure if it comes from later in the series, like the personal connection between Alger and Keelings/Qilangos (or if I just missed this detail while reading lmao).

I highly recommend this series if you're into intricate worldbuilding, an isekai story that's totally different to the game-like staples of Japanese isekai.

Marriage Toxin

Genres: shonen, action, romance(?)

This show is about a professional hitman (Hikaru Gero) who must find a spouse in order to avoid a forced marriage for his little sister. He ends up teaming up with a professional "marriage swindler", and puts himself out there on the dating market while fending off real physical threats (usually other hitmen). The premise of this series had me interested, but I never felt compelled to pick up the manga before.

I'm so glad this anime was made, and that it was done with such care too! The action scenes were great, and Gero's goal of finding a spouse and getting married is treated with just as much seriousness as the fights. It's funny, heartwarming, and fun. I had a blast watching this show!

Even though it's kind of formatted like a harem (there are several women that he meets that could be potential love interests), I like how respectful this show is towards the women involved as well. They're fully fledged characters with their own goals and personalities, and quite charming. I even have a particular character I'm rooting for, though I still think the end-game is still Mei Kinosaki (the aforementioned marriage swindler) even though Mei is a male crossdresser.

It's already been announced to get a 2nd season, and I'm going to pick up the manga as well.

Nippon Sangoku ⭐

Genres: historical, drama, military

If you are a fan of either Kingdom or Legend of Galactic Heroes, this is a high recommendation from me! No need to read further or spoil yourself.

For everyone else, this is a post-nuclear, post-apocalyptic show about a future Japan that is split up into three countries, where technology has regressed to the early... 1800s? There are no vehicles, and the remaining people of Japan are scrambling for survival while inhabiting the ruins of a bygone time.

The setting is fascinating, and the story even more so. A young man (teenager really) loses his wife in a political tragedy and aims to take revenge by changing the world. Despite the main character having a singular focus, the series shows all angles and multiple characters on both sides of the conflict(s). From what I understand, it also makes heavy use of the real historical Chinese Three Kingdoms period, and there are references to real historical figures throughout Chinese and Japanese history.

This was the show I couldn't wait to watch week to week, it had me hooked! It was fascinating keeping up with all the plots and machinations, and it always keeps you guessing. Also, unfortunately, nobody is safe either. Characters that receive a brief (awesome) scene could be killed at any moment, so I never felt sure of what would happen next.

I need a second season for this one, and it's a show that's entered my favorites of all time. I'm sure the manga is fantastic too, and I'll definitely be picking it up when it becomes available.

The Ramparts of Ice

Genres: romance, drama

Last season had the author's other work "You and I Are Polar Opposites", and based on the strength of that one, I decided to watch this as well. Oh boy. It's great!

But definitely not at all similar to Polar Opposites, which just shows how wide the author's range is. This is a much more serious drama about a highschool girl who has lived her life closed off from others due to trauma in the past. She learns to open up and ends up developing a close-knit friend group, and the beginnings of a romance with one of the friends.

The tea is hot and the drama is juicy, what can I say. I was so hyped for each episode, just wanting to find out what happens next. The characters are relatable and feel very human, including their maybe not ideal reactions to events that occur in the show. The Polar Opposites characters felt like very real teenagers, and the characters in Ramparts of Ice also feel very real, in a different more somber story. That's not to say that there aren't moments of levity or happiness.

I also appreciate how emotions were portrayed in this show, and how the characters deal with them. Often times, shows focused on highschool-aged characters can end up making the characters feel unbelievably daft for their age, unable to either take a hint or understand what's going on. I never felt that way with this show. This one also got a 2nd season announcement, which is awesome! It must be a split cour series, and it seems like we'll be getting a full series adaptation. I'll be eagerly waiting for the next installment.

The Warrior Princess and the Barbaric King

Genres: romance, action, fantasy

I've read the manga for this one, so I wasn't to eager to keep up with the series since I knew what was going to happen next. The premise is that the main character (the titular Warrior Princess, though really she's more like a "Knight" Princess), loses in combat to Veor, the leader of the "Barbarians", and is abducted with the intentions of marriage. This plot-line is straight out of a harlequin novel.

However, the series is part-romance, part-action/fantasy, and the author put some effort into the worldbuilding. The development of the relationship between Veor and Sera is cute and funny, and the show is mostly a lighthearted watch.

I have some qualms with some plot holes, such as how a Kingdom that is perpetually starving is able to even wage a war against the "barbarians" to begin with, but honestly I here for great political intrigue lol. It was a fine watch.

I was super excited for the next season of Bookworm to come out, since it's one of my all time favorite light novel series and got me into light novels to begin with. I think it's great that it's getting a 2-cour season. I'll cover it in further detail in the Summer Roundup!

Agents of the Four Seasons S1

This season is complete at 14 episodes, but I'm still watching it (I've only seen 5 episodes so far). I've already read the light novels for it, so I wasn't really in a hurry. I'll address this in the next roundup after I've watched the show lol.

I left Twitter in 2023 and moved to Mastodon, so this book has some personal relevance to me. I was really interested to find out the history of how Mastodon (and the fediverse) was built, and all the different struggles people went through to get it running.

It was really insightful, and maybe a little shocking to see how at odds activitypub and indieweb were, given how many of the named indieweb "pioneers" are well known on fedi right now. Their pushback against safety tools that are helpful to marginalized communities has me side eyeing them more now. This book is seriously deep lore.

I'm glad this book exists, I learned a lot!

I thought his book would go into some speculation about possible causes for the population decline (such as biological issues), but it mostly focused on the sociological aspects.

I found it interesting that every country is going through the same issue, and it was nice to hear all the different accounts of women in different countries. However, I felt like this book was too surface level to really address the real effects of a population decline, how it might affect society as a whole.

This book also feels very relevant even now, especially in the current political climate with the rise of alt-right nativists everywhere in the western world.

Thoughts:

Very cute and enjoyable game. The platforming wasn't too bad, though there was one challenge I didn't finish. The story and characters were very silly! I enjoyed looking for the secret passageways. It's pretty short, but I got this on sale so I don't feel too bad about it.

Anime Roundup: Winter 2026

Champignon Witch

Genres: fantasy

I had high expectations for this show, but unfortunately it didn't really live up to them. The setting and premise is great, but Luna as a main character is quiet and timid, and doesn't really assert herself. That lack of assertiveness means that the audience is forced to watch as she goes through setbacks and disrespect from the people of the world without anything changing.

Also, the boy who she looks after, Lisl, is not able to progress much as a character either, even though the bulk of the season is spent on his development. It's a very slow-paced series, hopefully there's more to it in the manga. At least the setting and art are very good at portraying the fairy tale appeal.

The Daily Life of a Part-time Torturer

Genres: comedy, iyashikei, slice of life

A light workplace slice-of-life comedy with found family and BL ship tease. Also, their jobs are to torture villains for information to fight crime. I was interested just with the premise, but this is a surprisingly heartfelt series when it comes to the character dynamics. Really worth the watch, and I highly recommend it!

Fire Force S3 Part 2

Genres: shonen, action

Fire Force is a great show, and needs no introduction other than the fact that its the same author as the Soul Eater series. It's undoubtedly shounen, but it's just so fun. This is the last season (no movie thank god), and there are many shocking twists and turns in the story. I wish this series had more episodes allotted to the 3rd season, or maybe 3.5 seasons, because they crammed 80+ chapters worth of content into 24 episodes.

I haven't read the manga, but I've seen mentions of the cut content along the way. Unfortunate, but this is still worth watching. I'm also cheating by posting this before the last episode has aired this friday, but it's my blog, I do what I want lol. I'll add to this if I have more to say.

Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End S2

Genres: fantasy, action

A series that needs no introduction. Since the first season got 28 episodes, these 10 episodes finish out the 3 cours I'm sure were initially greenlit. This was a fantastic season, and focused on many of the smaller side stories in this section of the manga before the upcoming [SPOILER] arc. I think the Genau arc was the best part here, and of course I'll be looking forward to season 3.

A Gentle Noble's Vacation Recommendation

Genres: isekai, iyashikei

I've read the manga for this one. It's a story about how a man from a fantasy world gets isekai'd into a world very similar to his own, but different. Instead of worrying about why this happened, he decides to treat this weird occurrence as a vacation and enjoys his new life as an adventurer while waiting for rescue. He also happens to build a male harem.

Yes this is one of those BL-adjacent shows. There's no smooching but honestly people were saying this show was more gay than Isekai Office Worker, which has a legitimate romance!

It's a very chill watch.

Isekai Office Worker: The Other World's Books Depend on the Bean Counter

I was so surprised when this series was announced for an anime adaptation, as it's a BL series about an overworked salaryman finding life, love, and purpose in a new world. This is originally a completed 3 volume series (it received an announcement of a 4th volume while the anime was airing), and this adaptation covers the first 2 volumes. It kind of makes me sad and happy at the same time, that instead of rushing through the story, they spend their time with the characters and leaving the anime ending “open-ended”. Perhaps there's a chance for a 2nd season??

If it wasn't clear from my rambling, this series means a lot to me. It's very rare to get an adult romance in anime, let alone a gay adult romance about a man who is not very romantic or dramatic. The drama comes from the circumstances, but Sei and Aresh's relationship continues to grow and becomes quite the sweet affair.

This series also has an interesting storyline about the politics of the world and how Sei's reforms lead to change, so it's not simply a romance, but a competent isekai show as well. I'm begging Kadokawa to please make a 2nd season, and for Yen Press to license the 4th book!!

Journal with Witch

Genres: drama

This was a standout hit for me. The main character is a teenager whose parents have died, and she now has to find her way through the loneliness and grief of losing her family while living with her reclusive and neurodivergent aunt, who is a famous author. I practically cried every episode, as there was something emotional, joyful, devastating, and compelling about each episode.

To be honest, I already knew this was going to be a hit because I watched (and read) the author's previous work turned into an anime, The Night Beyond the Tricornered Window.

You and I Are Polar Opposites

Genres: shojo, romance, iyashikei

I saw a comment from someone that said “This show makes you want to go back to highschool and confess to your crush.” and I totally get what they mean.

It's a highschool romcom about couples who are opposites of each other, and it's sooooo sweet! It's a show that makes you believe in young love. It's impossible not to smile while watching the show, my cheeks hurt from the cuteness lol. This is a 10/10 show, and I highly recommend it.

So relieved it's getting a 2nd season!

Animal Well

Thoughts:

I wish I could say I enjoyed this game all the way through.

The good: I enjoyed the puzzles, the exploration, and the vibes. Finding new hidden rooms and paths was really fun, and the puzzles were engaging and fun to solve. The pixel art is amazing, and the world is intricately designed. When I was able to casually explore, I was super locked in and had a great time.

The bad: I hate platforming and I'm bad at it. This game expects you to have a decent set of platforming skills, and if you suck, you're gonna have a bad time. There were several rooms where I KNEW the solution, but it took me forever to execute because I just can't time the jumps correctly. I would try over and over and end up giving myself hand pain.

Also, at the end of the game, there's an area where creatures chase you the entire time while you desperately try to solve a button maze. You only have a limited amount of hearts, so they easily kill you.

This is pretty much inaccessible to my skills, so I just watched the ending on youtube. I enjoyed 90% of the game and found 32/65 eggs, so that's good enough for me.

Monster Hunter Wilds

Thoughts:

I initially bought the game at launch, but fell off really quick since I wasn't drawn into the grind like I was with previous games. I eventually finished when I started playing with some friends who were able to make the experience fun.

Just finished low rank, and I'm still playing through high rank. I had fun playing with other people in multiplayer, and I do like the new monsters and armor sets, but I miss learning the map and exploring every nook and cranny (GU and Rise were my favorite (and first) MH games). The Seikret is super convenient in a number of ways, but maybe it makes the game too "easy".

I enjoyed the story and learning about the new people in the Forbidden Lands, and I hope the new armor and weapons are cool enough to continue my way through high rank.

I honestly got the impression that the whole book would focus on Tsurutani's story and his fall into "depravity" with the American men featured on the cover, but it's actually two separate stories in one book. The first story is how Tsurutani becomes quite the enthusiastic enjoyer of intimate relations with men and how he seduces the company CEO, and the second is how Tsurutani's ex, Dan, copes with losing Tsurutani by finding another man, Ryousuke, to "ruin".

My synopsis makes these stories sound like whimsical erotic romps, but in true Konohara Narise fashion the stories end up being dark and psychological. Ryousuke basically sleeps his way to the top only to realize that he can't actually do his job or have the live he wanted to live, and ends up professionally and physically dependent on Dan.

Given the type of book that this is, I honestly would have liked it better if the focus was on Tsurutani's story. I think we spent way too much time with the second guy's miserable circumstances, which is a real mood killer. I don't care about Ryousuke's shitty life, I wanted more of Tsurutani's R18 development!</details>

Ugh, this is why I didn't want to write my impressions in the first place...

This was a super relaxing and chill time, just cleaning up the ocean and making some cute (loddle) friends! I cleaned up all the areas and got all the achievements except for the loddledex.

I would like to rate it higher, but the gameplay loop is dead simple. There's only a few upgrades, and not much reason to go for them other than convenience.

It has the same kind of draw as power wash simulator, but not much more beyond that. Almost a meditative experience.

I'm giving this book 5 stars because because I love the series, and because the author has the guts to lampshade the Z/Z ship at every opportunity (especially with Daimen and Silverlake).

Honestly though, I kind of liked the 3rd book better, if only because I liked the slower-paced adventuring. While the 3rd book was longer, a lot happened. This book felt like the opposite. It's roughly the same length as the other books, but the 4th book is entirely about how Zach and Zorian finally stop the invasion of Cyoria.

It's one long intense shonen-battle-manga-esque war arc between the heroes and villains. No expenses spared. Rule of cool in force. And I read it all in 2 days! Heck, I read 70% of it in one day. Once you get on this ride, there's really no getting off of it until the conclusion. Zorian is truly the godlike OP cheat-level archmage that all isekai protags aspire to be, and I really loved that his last contribution to the fight was the one most in his wheelhouse of abilities.

However, I do have some minor issues with the ending. This may be due to the author's writing style or the nature of where it was originally published (fictionpress/royalroad), but the ending felt it was missing a lot of emotional depth.

<details><summary>Spoilers</summary>Zorian spends the entire book devastated about the sacrifices made in order to get him out of the time loop, but we simply never see him process that (due to the upcoming war). On top of that, we don't see Zach's reaction to Zorian's ultimate mind magic betrayal in order to save his life. It was pretty much the climax of the story, and yet his reaction to winning (in real life) was completely skipped over. We also never found out how exactly Jornak erased Zach's memories since he's not that good of a mind mage, but I don't care too much about him so whatever. </details>

Ah well, that's what fanfics are for, I guess. Overall, I loved the premise, characters, story, and world-building so I guess I can't complain too much.

Arc 3 contains many of the biggest adventures yet for this series. From the Jungles of Koth to the Xlotic deserts of Miasina, Zorian and Zach continue their efforts of gathering all the keys. While they still spend a lot of time upskilling and preparing themselves, mainly with some (quite) unlikely mentors, the MCs accomplish quite a few crazy feats in this one.

I also appreciated the continued character development of Zorian and his family. They don't have a healthy relationship at all, but with Zorian's current maturity and Zach's outside point-of-view, we get a chance to really see what happened that ended up landing Zorian his "black sheep" role in the family.

Like all of the Arcs before, this one ended spectacularly, with a cliffhanger that makes me want to continue reading. I've been taking my time with reading this series, and I've thankfully been able to keep from bingeing, even though I want to. This series is just so addicting and easy to keep reading!

<details><summary>Spoiler thoughts about the plot events</summary> <p>I really couldn't believe it when Quatach-Ichl just showed up in a random tavern and decided to interrogate Zach and Zorian about what the heck they're up to. In hindsight this is something that could have happened at any point of the story if he had figured it out, but his casual way of dealing with these two teenagers expert mages had me cackling.</p>

<p>Also, Silverlake is both annoying/frustrating, and a greatly entertaining character. I've been spoiled about some of the future events in the story for Arc 4, so seeing the hints laying the groundwork was quite interesting to see (trying not to reveal what it is since obviously I haven't read Arc 4 either).</p></details>

Zorian continues his journey of progressing his magic abilities after the conclusion of the last volume, which left him barely able to get away from the Red Robe. The entire series is one giant training arc before the big fight, and this is much of the same.

However, I liked meeting all the new characters, like Alanic and Lukav. Zorian himself is just gathering sympathetic mentors who are willing to teach him since he seems to be in grave danger, and another character rightly points out how impossible this would be in normal circumstances (better to take advantage of it!). While the characters aren't too "deep", they definitely feel distinct and interesting to follow. I would love to spend more time and learn more about these people. Unfortunately, Zorian is too busy for that.

This makes me wonder if this world's magic and technology is held back by it's current social structure. Nobody has the incentive to share resources and knowledge, leading to a bunch of lost knowledge (like the teleportation gates and such).

While Zorian is the main character, Zach is such an integral character that he's basically a deuteragonist. It's fun to see Zorian mature as an individual, especially when it comes to his interactions with Zach. Their interactions are honestly the best part of the book.

The bombshell revelation at the end means that I WILL be reading Arc 3 immediately.

This was a surprising hit for me! When I first started reading, I was really annoyed by Zorian's personality and was pretty much ready to write off the series until I remembered that he's 15 years old and not that different from a normal (prickly) teenage boy.

Once you understand that Zorian is truly a tsundere, it became way easier to continue on with the rest of the book and get sucked in. He has his reasons for why he dislikes things, and once you get to know him, it's easier to see where he's coming from.

I thought the time loops might get repetitive, but it was engaging every single time. The author skips loops where not much happens of consequence, and the details and conversations we do get are always interesting. I appreciate the thorough world-building and how we slowly fleshed out the side-characters like Zorian's family and friends.

There were several moments in the book that had me snort, like Zorian finding out he may be soul-bonded to Zach 🧐🏳️‍🌈? or when he was scheming about making his sister Kirielle meet Novelty (a telepathic spider).

I'm already wanting to read the next book, and this series might end up being one of my all-time favs.

The puzzles are too easy, I never struggled with them at all until the end, where the game suddenly forces a timer on you to solve them.

The Zelda references are just that, references. There's no combat in this game, and there are no items that let you back track and find new areas.

All the villagers you save from the tower give you annoying fetch quests in order to increase your heart/friendship level with them. I did a lot of them, but there's no reward other than some minor cosmetics, or items that help you with other fetch quests.

This is a "cozy" game, and there's not any stress associated with the task completion. The story isn't that deep either. I can't say I absolutely loved playing this game, but it was an okay way to pass the time.

It's written in first person perspective, which makes it even more heartbreaking to read. It's hard to outright recommend this to people, but if you're ready for an exploration of a broken-man who never stood a chance in society, this is one to read.

There was so much padding and filler that I almost fell asleep playing. The only thing I can really praise is the production values.

This was my first exposure to the Famicom Detective Club series, and I'm pretty sure this is the worst one.

The game would have been better if there was a section where you investigated as Utsugi and was able to solve the mystery yourself.

Rolled credits at 60 hours, but I still felt like I had a ton left to do! This game is super grindy, but it was fun to play farming sim in a different setting than usual. There weren't that many crew events/cutscenes triggered from (my) normal play, so that was a bit disappointing. Not sure if there is any story content after the credits roll, but there are still main quests and a planet to explore.

Verse Book 3 by Sam Beck

This is the conclusion to the "Verse" graphic novel series.

I think the art is really good, and I liked the diversity of characters. There's also plenty of LGBT representation.

However, I feel like this series either had not enough volumes to fully explore the themes of the story, or the author came up with the ending after book 2. The pacing of Book 1 is slow, building up the setting and the characters, and then Book 2 is even slower. There's lots of filler and "romantic tension" scenes with characters that left no time for the actual plot development. And then it all got shoved into Book 3, which rushed everything and honestly had a half-assed ending.

I didn't feel like I was reading a well-plotted series, which is a shame since I thought the world could have been explored much more thoroughly even with the 3 books it had.

This was a fun one. It started as a titanic-adjacent story and quickly evolves as the mystery (and horror) of what is truly happening on the ship becomes clear. The tension between the two main leads (and their life goals) was interesting, and their relationship, while being forced to go through its paces, seems to have arrived at a gentle parting.

Something about the framing device of him telling the story in the present day became a drag, and I thought more could have been done with the time traveling concept (most of the story was about him being stuck in one particular time period).

I understand that this is all in service of a particular theme, but I didn't really enjoy it. 🤷‍♀️

It's been such a fun time playing this game. While the dialogue can run too long at times (wish they had an auto-play function for the dialogue!), the characters were charming and funny. I got super addicted to playing this game, and I still have plenty left to do. For now, I've completed the main story and leveled up all the lives that I was interested in to Master-level.

I've already ordered the next game in the series. If you love cozy rpgs with crafting elements, this is THE game!

I still find the concept of being marked "other" to the extent that every part of the ecosystem hates you to be a somewhat unscientific concept (like how does the Severance work if it's only applied topically?)

But the twist in this one was interesting enough that I'm willing to forgive the maybe-plot-holes (humans have killed each other for less. They wouldn't respect each other THAT much).

I'm familiar with All Tomorrows by C.M. Kosemen, so I wasn't too squicked out by it. Cool read.

This story was short, but said everything that it wanted to say in that time period.

It's a much more allegorical view on how technology can divide humanity and deprive of us real connections, and it managed that quite succinctly.

For people who would like a deeper exploration of a similar type of "machine" that ends up controling human society in an enclosed environment, check Yokohama Station SF by Yuba Isukari.

Got this for free on Epic. It's a short game with an eco-friendly and anti capitalist narrative. The gameplay was simple and the puzzles were fairly easy, but I had a fun 2 hours. Not sure if I would get it at full price, but it's decent on sale.

This book explored the "ancient advanced civilization" trope like Elder Race, but focused in on how the changes made for humanity to thrive were in fact the only way they could survive.

One of the themes of this story was how easy it is to radicalize people who are outcast from society for one reason or another. I think in today's society, understanding how this works is even more important.

It tackled quite a bit in such a short story, and I think this book did a good job of balancing its ideas.

I did end up liking Elder Race better, hence the rating. I'm still planning on reading the second book in this series though, so maybe that will affect my impression afterwards.

It was such a mistake to start this book in the evening! What I intended to be quick reading session turned into a binge as I read into the late hours.

I had such a good time reading this book!! I love a good odd couple style pairing, and this was so sweet and subtle with how their relationship progressed. The setting was also interesting, separating sorcerers into two categories: scrivers (who write the spells) and casters (who actually cast/use them). It felt fresh and well thought out!

<details><summary>Spoilers</summary> We didn't get a conclusive ending in terms of the relationship, but I'm excited for the next book! I love that this book really took it's time to setup the main duo, and Leo STILL doesn't know that Grimm likes him too. 🤭 I don't think Grimm used that feather at ALL to break the spell, he just fell in love! </details>

This was a surprise hit for me, and I'm dying for the next book. It was a cute M/M cozy fantasy with a slow burn romance, with a well executed plot and nice world-building.

I enjoyed Iron Widow for how fresh and raw it felt as a narrative, though the first book was paced at breakneck speed.

It feels like this book is a response to that first one in so many ways. I enjoyed the slower political machinations and plot twists in this one. I liked all the new characters that are introduced and the increased scope of the world-building. Thoroughly enjoyed this one, and I'll be eagerly awaiting the next book!

The only other Tchaikovsky book I've read so far is Cage of Souls, and this honestly feels like a redux of some of the elements that didn't get a chance to play out much in that book. It definitely feels related, these two books are sisters.

<details> <summary>Spoiler</summary> For example, people banding together to solve a problem (overthrowing the government), and the development of what I'll call the Morphogenetic field (courtesy of the excellent Zero Escape series). These elements couldn't be explored in Cage of Souls as much due to the fact that most everyone disappears. </details>

While I think I still liked Cage of Souls better, this was a shorter and more focused book, which I'm grateful for. Interesting ideas, as always.

I didn't expect to like this book as much as I did! Lots of political intrigue and plot to keep you engaged. The sexual aspects alluded to weren't anything worse than the Game of Thrones show, so it was easy for me to look past it. But I can see why some people wouldn't be able to stomach it.

Edit 2025.12.16: I did read the other novels, but I never wrote an impression for them. I enjoyed them!

This book was alright.

I was expecting more from the romance angle, honestly the story just reaches a random point and then the "romance" switch gets turned on for the FMC and male lead. Even then, barely anything happens. The book is too short to address both the plot and allow time for the romance to develop, so it's 95% plot (which was enough to keep me reading). It's a singular setting that focuses on very few characters.

The world building was more interesting than the actual plot. I don't think I'll read another one of this author's books though

I watched the movie first, and then read the book in quick succession. Overall, it was an engaging read. Despite the dire circumstances, Mark Watney's sense of humor carries the book pretty far. Also, even though it was science fiction, it pretty much read like a nonfiction survival story.

I went into this book expecting a deep dive of the scientific decay in post-apocalyptic humanity, but because the main character is a social science guy, it is shown from his perspective and viewpoint.

It's a memoir written from the main character, Stefan's perspective, and the there are several flashbacks to previous points in his life.

I found the prison/current story line to be the most gripping part of the story.

<details> <summary>Spoiler</summary> Also, the fact that the end game is Peter/Keira/Stefan is pretty great. I shipped these three quite a bit, hopefully they find some kind of happiness at the end of the world. </details>

Genuinely dislike this game lol. The art/music/etc. isn't so bad, but the platforming is frustrating, and not in a good game designed way. You slide off of platforms all the time, and the camera fights you. Maybe this is how older 3D platformers used to be.
