Thoughts:

I wish I could say I enjoyed this game all the way through.

The good: I enjoyed the puzzles, the exploration, and the vibes. Finding new hidden rooms and paths was really fun, and the puzzles were engaging and fun to solve. The pixel art is amazing, and the world is intricately designed. When I was able to casually explore, I was super locked in and had a great time.

The bad: I hate platforming and I'm bad at it. This game expects you to have a decent set of platforming skills, and if you suck, you're gonna have a bad time. There were several rooms where I KNEW the solution, but it took me forever to execute because I just can't time the jumps correctly. I would try over and over and end up giving myself hand pain.

Also, at the end of the game, there's an area where creatures chase you the entire time while you desperately try to solve a button maze. You only have a limited amount of hearts, so they easily kill you.

This is pretty much inaccessible to my skills, so I just watched the ending on youtube. I enjoyed 90% of the game and found 32/65 eggs, so that's good enough for me.

Monster Hunter Wilds

Thoughts:

I initially bought the game at launch, but fell off really quick since I wasn't drawn into the grind like I was with previous games. I eventually finished when I started playing with some friends who were able to make the experience fun.

Just finished low rank, and I'm still playing through high rank. I had fun playing with other people in multiplayer, and I do like the new monsters and armor sets, but I miss learning the map and exploring every nook and cranny (GU and Rise were my favorite (and first) MH games). The Seikret is super convenient in a number of ways, but maybe it makes the game too "easy".

I enjoyed the story and learning about the new people in the Forbidden Lands, and I hope the new armor and weapons are cool enough to continue my way through high rank.

This book is explicit BL. I seriously considered not bothering to write any impressions, but in the end, I wanted to record my own thoughts about this work. I will be putting everything under spoiler text due to the R18 content.

<details><summary>You've been warned!</summary>

I honestly got the impression that the whole book would focus on Tsurutani's story and his fall into "depravity" with the American men featured on the cover, but it's actually two separate stories in one book. The first story is how Tsurutani becomes quite the enthusiastic enjoyer of intimate relations with men and how he seduces the company CEO, and the second is how Tsurutani's ex, Dan, copes with losing Tsurutani by finding another man, Ryousuke, to "ruin".

My synopsis makes these stories sound like whimsical erotic romps, but in true Konohara Narise fashion the stories end up being dark and psychological. Ryousuke basically sleeps his way to the top only to realize that he can't actually do his job or have the live he wanted to live, and ends up professionally and physically dependent on Dan.

Given the type of book that this is, I honestly would have liked it better if the focus was on Tsurutani's story. I think we spent way too much time with the second guy's miserable circumstances, which is a real mood killer. I don't care about Ryousuke's shitty life, I wanted more of Tsurutani's R18 development!</details>

Ugh, this is why I didn't want to write my impressions in the first place...

Thoughts:

This was a super relaxing and chill time, just cleaning up the ocean and making some cute (loddle) friends! I cleaned up all the areas and got all the achievements except for the loddledex.

I would like to rate it higher, but the gameplay loop is dead simple. There's only a few upgrades, and not much reason to go for them other than convenience.

It has the same kind of draw as power wash simulator, but not much more beyond that. Almost a meditative experience.

Mother of Learning Arc 4 by Domagoj Kurmaić AKA nobody103

I'm giving this book 5 stars because because I love the series, and because the author has the guts to lampshade the Z/Z ship at every opportunity (especially with Daimen and Silverlake).

Honestly though, I kind of liked the 3rd book better, if only because I liked the slower-paced adventuring. While the 3rd book was longer, a lot happened. This book felt like the opposite. It's roughly the same length as the other books, but the 4th book is entirely about how Zach and Zorian finally stop the invasion of Cyoria.

It's one long intense shonen-battle-manga-esque war arc between the heroes and villains. No expenses spared. Rule of cool in force. And I read it all in 2 days! Heck, I read 70% of it in one day. Once you get on this ride, there's really no getting off of it until the conclusion. Zorian is truly the godlike OP cheat-level archmage that all isekai protags aspire to be, and I really loved that his last contribution to the fight was the one most in his wheelhouse of abilities.

However, I do have some minor issues with the ending. This may be due to the author's writing style or the nature of where it was originally published (fictionpress/royalroad), but the ending felt it was missing a lot of emotional depth.

<details><summary>Spoilers</summary>Zorian spends the entire book devastated about the sacrifices made in order to get him out of the time loop, but we simply never see him process that (due to the upcoming war). On top of that, we don't see Zach's reaction to Zorian's ultimate mind magic betrayal in order to save his life. It was pretty much the climax of the story, and yet his reaction to winning (in real life) was completely skipped over. We also never found out how exactly Jornak erased Zach's memories since he's not that good of a mind mage, but I don't care too much about him so whatever. </details>

Ah well, that's what fanfics are for, I guess. Overall, I loved the premise, characters, story, and world-building so I guess I can't complain too much.

Mother of Learning Arc 3 by Domagoj Kurmaić AKA nobody103

Arc 3 contains many of the biggest adventures yet for this series. From the Jungles of Koth to the Xlotic deserts of Miasina, Zorian and Zach continue their efforts of gathering all the keys. While they still spend a lot of time upskilling and preparing themselves, mainly with some (quite) unlikely mentors, the MCs accomplish quite a few crazy feats in this one.

I also appreciated the continued character development of Zorian and his family. They don't have a healthy relationship at all, but with Zorian's current maturity and Zach's outside point-of-view, we get a chance to really see what happened that ended up landing Zorian his "black sheep" role in the family.

Like all of the Arcs before, this one ended spectacularly, with a cliffhanger that makes me want to continue reading. I've been taking my time with reading this series, and I've thankfully been able to keep from bingeing, even though I want to. This series is just so addicting and easy to keep reading!

<details><summary>Spoiler thoughts about the plot events</summary> <p>I really couldn't believe it when Quatach-Ichl just showed up in a random tavern and decided to interrogate Zach and Zorian about what the heck they're up to. In hindsight this is something that could have happened at any point of the story if he had figured it out, but his casual way of dealing with these two teenagers expert mages had me cackling.</p>

<p>Also, Silverlake is both annoying/frustrating, and a greatly entertaining character. I've been spoiled about some of the future events in the story for Arc 4, so seeing the hints laying the groundwork was quite interesting to see (trying not to reveal what it is since obviously I haven't read Arc 4 either).</p></details>

Zorian continues his journey of progressing his magic abilities after the conclusion of the last volume, which left him barely able to get away from the Red Robe. The entire series is one giant training arc before the big fight, and this is much of the same.

However, I liked meeting all the new characters, like Alanic and Lukav. Zorian himself is just gathering sympathetic mentors who are willing to teach him since he seems to be in grave danger, and another character rightly points out how impossible this would be in normal circumstances (better to take advantage of it!). While the characters aren't too "deep", they definitely feel distinct and interesting to follow. I would love to spend more time and learn more about these people. Unfortunately, Zorian is too busy for that.

This makes me wonder if this world's magic and technology is held back by it's current social structure. Nobody has the incentive to share resources and knowledge, leading to a bunch of lost knowledge (like the teleportation gates and such).

While Zorian is the main character, Zach is such an integral character that he's basically a deuteragonist. It's fun to see Zorian mature as an individual, especially when it comes to his interactions with Zach. Their interactions are honestly the best part of the book.

The bombshell revelation at the end means that I WILL be reading Arc 3 immediately.

This was a surprising hit for me! When I first started reading, I was really annoyed by Zorian's personality and was pretty much ready to write off the series until I remembered that he's 15 years old and not that different from a normal (prickly) teenage boy.

Once you understand that Zorian is truly a tsundere, it became way easier to continue on with the rest of the book and get sucked in. He has his reasons for why he dislikes things, and once you get to know him, it's easier to see where he's coming from.

I thought the time loops might get repetitive, but it was engaging every single time. The author skips loops where not much happens of consequence, and the details and conversations we do get are always interesting. I appreciate the thorough world-building and how we slowly fleshed out the side-characters like Zorian's family and friends.

There were several moments in the book that had me snort, like Zorian finding out he may be soul-bonded to Zach 🧐🏳️‍🌈? or when he was scheming about making his sister Kirielle meet Novelty (a telepathic spider).

I'm already wanting to read the next book, and this series might end up being one of my all-time favs.

Thoughts:

The puzzles are too easy, I never struggled with them at all until the end, where the game suddenly forces a timer on you to solve them.

The Zelda references are just that, references. There's no combat in this game, and there are no items that let you back track and find new areas.

All the villagers you save from the tower give you annoying fetch quests in order to increase your heart/friendship level with them. I did a lot of them, but there's no reward other than some minor cosmetics, or items that help you with other fetch quests.

This is a "cozy" game, and there's not any stress associated with the task completion. The story isn't that deep either. I can't say I absolutely loved playing this game, but it was an okay way to pass the time.

This was a tough one to read. Mura, the MC, is intellectually disabled, and is barely able to work for food. He tries to get by, but terrible things continue to happen to him.

<details><summary>Spoilers</summary>When he finds out about the death of his parents, he is unable to bear it and and attempts self harm.</details>

It's written in first person perspective, which makes it even more heartbreaking to read. It's hard to outright recommend this to people, but if you're ready for an exploration of a broken-man who never stood a chance in society, this is one to read.

I had fun playing through this visual novel! It's a dark BL game with some interesting twists. Note that there's not really any happy endings, outside of the (probably) non-canon DLC.

It was enjoyable, and there were plenty of CGs. Each route only takes about 2 hours, so it didn't feel padded out either.

For a detective game, most of the detective work ends up being completely useless.

There was so much padding and filler that I almost fell asleep playing. The only thing I can really praise is the production values.

This was my first exposure to the Famicom Detective Club series, and I'm pretty sure this is the worst one.

"Cops are real pieces of shit." <- Absolutely correct quote from a character in-game.

The game would have been better if there was a section where you investigated as Utsugi and was able to solve the mystery yourself.

Rolled credits at 60 hours, but I still felt like I had a ton left to do! This game is super grindy, but it was fun to play farming sim in a different setting than usual. There weren't that many crew events/cutscenes triggered from (my) normal play, so that was a bit disappointing. Not sure if there is any story content after the credits roll, but there are still main quests and a planet to explore.

Verse Book 3 by Sam Beck

This is the conclusion to the "Verse" graphic novel series.

I think the art is really good, and I liked the diversity of characters. There's also plenty of LGBT representation.

However, I feel like this series either had not enough volumes to fully explore the themes of the story, or the author came up with the ending after book 2. The pacing of Book 1 is slow, building up the setting and the characters, and then Book 2 is even slower. There's lots of filler and "romantic tension" scenes with characters that left no time for the actual plot development. And then it all got shoved into Book 3, which rushed everything and honestly had a half-assed ending.

I didn't feel like I was reading a well-plotted series, which is a shame since I thought the world could have been explored much more thoroughly even with the 3 books it had.

This was a fun one. It started as a titanic-adjacent story and quickly evolves as the mystery (and horror) of what is truly happening on the ship becomes clear. The tension between the two main leads (and their life goals) was interesting, and their relationship, while being forced to go through its paces, seems to have arrived at a gentle parting.

The story is complete, but it seems like there could definitely be another book with these characters. I would love to see more of Neeta, Emery, and Wick!

It's been such a fun time playing this game. While the dialogue can run too long at times (wish they had an auto-play function for the dialogue!), the characters were charming and funny. I got super addicted to playing this game, and I still have plenty left to do. For now, I've completed the main story and leveled up all the lives that I was interested in to Master-level.

I've already ordered the next game in the series. If you love cozy rpgs with crafting elements, this is THE game!

I'm familiar with All Tomorrows by C.M. Kosemen, so I wasn't too squicked out by it. Cool read.

This book explored the "ancient advanced civilization" trope like Elder Race, but focused in on how the changes made for humanity to thrive were in fact the only way they could survive.

One of the themes of this story was how easy it is to radicalize people who are outcast from society for one reason or another. I think in today's society, understanding how this works is even more important.

It tackled quite a bit in such a short story, and I think this book did a good job of balancing its ideas.

I did end up liking Elder Race better, hence the rating. I'm still planning on reading the second book in this series though, so maybe that will affect my impression afterwards.

It was such a mistake to start this book in the evening! What I intended to be quick reading session turned into a binge as I read into the late hours.

I had such a good time reading this book!! I love a good odd couple style pairing, and this was so sweet and subtle with how their relationship progressed. The setting was also interesting, separating sorcerers into two categories: scrivers (who write the spells) and casters (who actually cast/use them). It felt fresh and well thought out!

<details><summary>Spoilers</summary> We didn't get a conclusive ending in terms of the relationship, but I'm excited for the next book! I love that this book really took it's time to setup the main duo, and Leo STILL doesn't know that Grimm likes him too. 🤭 I don't think Grimm used that feather at ALL to break the spell, he just fell in love! </details>

This was a surprise hit for me, and I'm dying for the next book. It was a cute M/M cozy fantasy with a slow burn romance, with a well executed plot and nice world-building.

I enjoyed Iron Widow for how fresh and raw it felt as a narrative, though the first book was paced at breakneck speed.

It feels like this book is a response to that first one in so many ways. I enjoyed the slower political machinations and plot twists in this one. I liked all the new characters that are introduced and the increased scope of the world-building. Thoroughly enjoyed this one, and I'll be eagerly awaiting the next book!

The only other Tchaikovsky book I've read so far is Cage of Souls, and this honestly feels like a redux of some of the elements that didn't get a chance to play out much in that book. It definitely feels related, these two books are sisters.

<details> <summary>Spoiler</summary> For example, people banding together to solve a problem (overthrowing the government), and the development of what I'll call the Morphogenetic field (courtesy of the excellent Zero Escape series). These elements couldn't be explored in Cage of Souls as much due to the fact that most everyone disappears. </details>

While I think I still liked Cage of Souls better, this was a shorter and more focused book, which I'm grateful for. Interesting ideas, as always.

I didn't expect to like this book as much as I did! Lots of political intrigue and plot to keep you engaged. The sexual aspects alluded to weren't anything worse than the Game of Thrones show, so it was easy for me to look past it. But I can see why some people wouldn't be able to stomach it.

Edit 2025.12.16: I did read the other novels, but I never wrote an impression for them. I enjoyed them!

This book was alright.

I was expecting more from the romance angle, honestly the story just reaches a random point and then the "romance" switch gets turned on for the FMC and male lead. Even then, barely anything happens. The book is too short to address both the plot and allow time for the romance to develop, so it's 95% plot (which was enough to keep me reading). It's a singular setting that focuses on very few characters.

The world building was more interesting than the actual plot. I don't think I'll read another one of this author's books though

I watched the movie first, and then read the book in quick succession. Overall, it was an engaging read. Despite the dire circumstances, Mark Watney's sense of humor carries the book pretty far. Also, even though it was science fiction, it pretty much read like a nonfiction survival story.

I went into this book expecting a deep dive of the scientific decay in post-apocalyptic humanity, but because the main character is a social science guy, it is shown from his perspective and viewpoint.

It's a memoir written from the main character, Stefan's perspective, and the there are several flashbacks to previous points in his life.

I found the prison/current story line to be the most gripping part of the story.

<details> <summary>Spoiler</summary> Also, the fact that the end game is Peter/Keira/Stefan is pretty great. I shipped these three quite a bit, hopefully they find some kind of happiness at the end of the world. </details>

Lots of interesting characters and concepts that don't exactly mesh together, but it's a fun ride.

Genuinely dislike this game lol. The art/music/etc. isn't so bad, but the platforming is frustrating, and not in a good game designed way. You slide off of platforms all the time, and the camera fights you. Maybe this is how older 3D platformers used to be.
