I’m an avid light novel reader, so I’m coming at this with that perspective and bias.
For the first 60-70% of this book, I was kind of just reading this book just because it’s been recommended to me by so many friends. I’m not super deep into LitRPG or the like, but I’m not totally new to the concept of “game-like” progression in fiction. While it was decent, there wasn’t really anything to hook me. Was the entire series just going to be about Carl and Donut making their way through the dungeon?
Of course not. As soon as the elements surrounding deeper issues and mysteries of the dungeon and Syndicate started being teased, I started to get really hooked. I really want to know what’s going on!
The book does a good job of keeping the fights fresh by bringing all kinds of new elements for each fight. It’s nice to see other characters get some focus here, and I’m curious about how things will develop next.
The cliffhanger that the book ended on is evil though, now I know what people are talking about in terms of DCC being addicting. I wanted to check out the next book from the library and there’s a 2 week wait. Oh well, it’s better to pace myself.
